CBD is exploding in popularity right now, especially during the current world pandemic. It’s not surprising the vast majority of us are experiencing at least some kind of change in our mental health brought on by a multitude of reasons from increased anxiety and disrupted sleep to a lack of physical activity, especially during lockdown. When our bodies are consistently experiencing these undesirable states of being we eventually come to rest in that undesirable state. The balance within us is off and we need to do something to restore that balance. To use the current buzz word, this undesirable state becomes our “new normal”.

Sometimes it is as simple as cause and effect. For example, you had a terrible nights sleep because your mind was in an anxious state. This state is causing your body to produce more chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline which in turn keep you awake. You get up the next day feeling dreadful and confront more events throughout the day that accentuate your anxiety and the next night you have another fitful sleep. Repeat ad nauseam. Welcome to your “new normal”.

It is possible for some of us to break this chain of events. You could wake up and be aware of your undesirable state and take mitigating actions. Work out first thing, flood your body and brain with endorphins which promote a positive feeling. Compound that feeling by meditating on it and breathing in to it. Take a cold shower which again boosts endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin. Through out the remainder of the day remind yourself of that feel good state and breathe in to it. Hopefully these activities will promote a better sleep as some chemical balance has been restored throughout the actions you have taken during the day. It’s not easy though is it. Working out and cold showers are usually the last thing we want to do when we feel like our world is falling apart or we just don’t have enough time in the day.

CBD help depression, restore chemical balance

However, for some of us depression is a persistent feeling of sadness and disinterest that just won’t go away no matter what we do. The causes of depression can be complicated and out of our control. Some people are genetically vulnerable. Medical conditions can affect our brains ability to control our mood.  Severe life stressors like we are all facing now with the pandemic. All these causes and many more will promote to varying degrees within us some form of depression.

Our bodies and the systems within us like our Nervous System and our Endocannabinoid System strive to keep us in a state of balance called Homeostasis. For example, our Autonomic Nervous System has a Sympathetic Nervous System and a Parasympathetic Nervous System and they work together to maintain a chemical balance within our bodies. See our post on What Is CBD for an in depth explanation on this. These systems when operating normally are generally enough to keep us balanced and healthy as long as we lead a balanced and healthy life. Too much time in an undesirable state however leads to a runaway of that state of being. We can soon find ourselves reinforcing exactly what we don’t want.

If you are suffering from depression please seek professional help as soon as possible. You would be surprised at how many of us have actually suffered from it and continue to suffer from it. It’s a truly horrible affliction but there are therapies and professionals available and waiting to help at any time of the day. I have listed their websites in the further reading section below.

You will be pleased to hear that there are several treatments for depression ranging from simple lifestyle changes to psychotherapy. Again please contact professionals to get more information on these treatments and how they can help you. There are also several natural and herbal remedies that you can legally buy that can help you including of course CBD (Cannabidiol).

  • St John’s Wort: A herbal remedy from a yellow flower that has been used for centuries. Research suggests it can alter the way your brain processes dopamine and serotonin.
  • Lavender: Touted for its sleep promoting ability and relaxing properties,
  • 5-HTP: Can help boost serotonin levels.
  • Omega 3: Studies have shown Omega Oil fatty acids can improve mood.
  • DHEA: This is a hormone produced by our adrenal gland and some studies say it can ease some mental health problems.
  • CBD: Cannabidiol.

CBD can be used as an affective treatment for depression. Our own body has a therapeutic Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS helps our body regulate mood, sleep and pain as well as other functions. CBD is a natural compound produced by our own bodies and there is a growing amount of research showing that it can be an effective natural supplement you can take to help alleviate depression without the usual side affects from pharmaceutical drugs.

CBD can have a fast acting anti-depressant effect as opposed to pharmaceutical drugs because CBD can increase the level of natural cannabinoids in the brain which stimulates Neuron growth and reduces inflammation. Research into depression is now focussing on Hippocampus Regeneration. Similar to the way neural cognitive therapy works. If you continually think one thought you reinforce that neural pathway but this takes it one step further, it promotes regeneration.

Inflammation is also linked with depression. Inflammation is natural and necessary. It is our body’s way of fighting against disease, infections and injuries. However prolonged inflammation is disastrous for our well being and mental health because it can actually damage our tissues. Recent research has shown that CBD supplements can reduce inflammation and it’s damaging effect to our tissue from free radicals.

If you are suffering from depression please always seek professional medical help first. However, there is growing evidence that CBD can have very beneficial results without any side effects.
